Every gamer has a story.

My Story: From Hurt to Hope

Story 1: Griefed in the Dune Awakening PvE Zone

I was deep into a spice run in Dune Awakening, hitting up a medium spice blow in a PvE zone where I figured it would be chill and safe. I had my crawler loaded to the brim after grinding for hours, and I called in my carrier to scoop it up and secure the haul. Everything was going perfectly until this player Dopplegate swooped in with his ornithopter, positioning it right in the way over and over, completely blocking my pickup and forcing me to watch helplessly as my precious cargo sat vulnerable. To make it worse, while he was busy trolling me with the ornithopter, he dropped a thumper nearby, summoning a massive sandworm that threatened to swallow my crawler whole. This was pure griefing in a zone meant for peaceful farming, no PvP allowed, and it wasted my entire session. Funcom, players like Dopplegate are ruining the game for everyone who just wants to enjoy the survival grind without this nonsense. Please ban him and fix these exploits before more of us quit PvE altogether.

Key Lesson: This experience shows why strong game moderation and effective reporting tools are essential. Unchecked griefing in PvE spaces can ruin the enjoyment and well-being of entire communities. Fair play and respect for others are critical to keeping gaming fun and welcoming for everyone.

Story 2: Targeted in Public Chat—Mental Health Weaponized

I recently had a really upsetting experience in the Public Deep Desert chat on the Pyxis server in Dune Awakening, a game I enjoy for its immersive world and community interactions. It was December 3 when this user named EviL Lemonade jumped into our conversation and started throwing around harmful labels. They called me “so bipolar” out of nowhere, then escalated by saying I was worse than their ex’s bipolar condition. When I pushed back and said that kind of mental health put down violated the game’s terms, they pretended to be concerned, insisting I needed help and offering to get it for me. It felt manipulative and invasive, like they had no right to diagnose or judge me that way. The whole thing left me feeling targeted and unsafe in a space that should be fun and inclusive. After that, I decided to speak up and report it, but I also wanted to connect with others who understand how toxic this behavior is in gaming communities. I learned about advocacy groups like Take This and the ADL’s Center for Technology and Society, which fight against hate speech and stigma in online gaming. Sharing my story here is my way of highlighting how armchair diagnosing and concern trolling is toxic, hurtful, and perpetuate ableism. If you’ve faced something similar, know you’re not alone, and reaching out to these organizations can make a difference. Let’s push for better moderation and kinder spaces where mental health isn’t weaponized.

Key Lesson: Weaponizing mental health and using concern trolling is deeply harmful and perpetuates stigma. Supportive, inclusive communities are built when we speak up, support one another, and push for better moderation. If you’ve faced similar behavior, know you’re not alone—reaching out and sharing your story can help drive positive change.

Gaming should be a safe space. But for many, it’s a battleground. Here, we honor the journeys of those who’ve faced hate, harassment, or exclusion—and found the courage to speak up, heal, and fight for change.
